Challenge Overview

Summary

Most of the demands in today's world encourage more and more sedentary behaviour... Meme'ing and streaming cultures alongside hectic work schedules and ever-evolving technologies all contribute to more time spent indoors and sitting down, and less time spent outside and upright. As a result, physical, mental, and spiritual health is deteriorating at an alarming rate. The National Health and Fitness Institute (NHFI) is on a mission to reverse this trend!

Innovators will be tasked with providing ideas on how to shift these unhealthy behaviours to ones that embrace a more active and healthier lifestyle, so Canadians can create a healthier version of themselves, and their fellow Canadians. In order to do this, innovators will need to understand the motivators of certain unhealthy behaviours, and figure out how to encourage people to make choices that support overall long-term health.

Challenge Rundown

The Structure:

The Healthy-Selfie Challenge will be made up of 2 phases, with phase 1 having 2 components: Video and Written.

Phase 1

Phase One is composed of a video you create and your written submission.

In this 1st phase, we want to see what “health and wellness” currently looks like to Canadians and the world. We want to see you create your own "Healthy Selfie" by recording yourself at your favourite place to be active and/or doing your favourite active routine in no longer than 5 minutes. In the video, you need to address the following points/questions:

Section 1: Video

You must include in your selfie video:

  1. Your name and the country where you are currently living;
  2. A brief explanation of the activity you are doing;
  3. Why you think the NHFI’s mission is important;
  4. Why you are participating in this challenge;
  5. YOU MUST INCORPORATE “Make Canada the fittest nation by 2030” somewhere in the video.

Once you have created your selfie:

  1. Follow NHFI and HeroX on Instagram or Facebook
  2. Post to your feed on Facebook or Instagram
  3. Tag NHFI and HeroX (Facebook = @IamHeroX & @nhfi.insap, Instagram = @BeHeroX & @nhfi_) in your selfie video
  4. Tag your friends in your post (in the comments section), and get them to like the video.

Section 2: Written

  1. Upload your selfie to YouTube or Vimeo and add the link to the submission form
  2. What does it mean to be "healthy" to you?
  3. What do you believe are the biggest factors contributing to sedentary lifestyles and inactivity?
  4. What solutions do you know of that are currently available to combat the sedentary and inactive behavior?
  5. Why do you believe these are not working, or not working as well as they should be?
  6. What is your idea that will increase activity, and help NHFI fulfill its mission?

Phase 2

Phase Two is composed of your answers to ten questions.

The National Health and Fitness Institute will choose the Top 10 submissions from the 1st Phase to move to the 2nd Phase. These finalists will be tasked with providing written answers to the following set of questions on Best Practices in other Healthy City/Country initiatives by conducting their own research:

  1. What is your solution to get Canadians active?
  2. What is the cause of sedentary behavior that your solution specifically addresses?
  3. Has this solution been deployed in other areas/countries before? Where?
  4. Why do you think your solution will work in Canada? Provide any supporting research available.
  5. What do you think are the most critical characteristics to be included when designing a solution to get Canadians active?
  6. What do you think is the key differentiating factor of your solution from anything else that is available?
  7. What are the biggest risks/obstacles to your solution being successful?
  8. What would you use to measure the success of your solution? (what are the key success indicators)
  9. Imagine it is 2030 and your solution was a HUGE success, what does that Canada look like?
  10. What most excites you about seeing your solution in action?

Video Requirements

All videos must meet the following requirements:

  • Length: Each video must be no longer than 5 minutes.
  • Camera: We do not expect you to hire a professional director! All smartphone cameras make pretty great selfie videos nowadays.
  • Orientation: All videos must be in Landscape mode (the one where it’s sideways!).
  • File Type: You will submit the video to HeroX as a .mov or a .mp4 file.

Restrictions:

  1. Only innovators who have submitted their media release to NHFI, should be in videos.
  2. We welcome the participation of minors in the videos but require a parent or guardian to sign a waiver for any child shown
  3. Be in line with HeroX Community Guidelines

BONUS: Tips for making your video AWESOME!

  • Get creative  - we would love to see the location that you associate with being healthy and active
  • Make sure you have attractive, bright lighting. We want to see who is talking!
  • Don’t stand too far from the phone or camera. We want to be able to see you.
  • Video recordings come out better when the subject is slightly below the camera. If holding the camera yourself (selfie mode) be sure to hold it slightly higher, then tilt your head upward.
  • Try to do your recording in an area where there is minimal chance for background disturbances like construction, busy roads, discos etc.
  • HAVE FUN!
