Overview

FASEB's BioArt Awards are presented annually to honor original, visually stunning photographs, illustrations, data visualizations, or videos that effectively communicate an important aspect of 21st Century biological research.

FASEB seeks visually compelling images or videos produced during biological/biomedical science research activities (e.g., electron microscopy, fluorescent microscopy, medical/anatomical illustrations, x-ray crystallography, MRI, histology, gel electrophoresis, data visualizations, structural and pathway illustrations, etc.).

FASEB will award $500 each to four winning images and videos across four categories:

Fluorescence or electron microscopy
Short video
Other life science images
Trainee / Early-career (open to graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and researchers within 7 years of first independent scientist position)

Guidelines

Entries may be submitted by an individual or a group
One entry per category allowed per submitter or group.
Entries must be original creations by the submitter(s) and not published elsewhere
The submitter(s) must hold the copyright of the submitted image. FASEB and partnering organizations are not responsible for legal claims related to the improper submission of works belonging to other individuals or organizations
Entries must relate to biological / biomedical science research
Images and videos must not be of a patient or human research subject, but may be of human cells
Images, illustrations, or videos advertising or marketing specific companies or commercial products are ineligible
All entrants grant FASEB and partnering organizations the ability to modify entries for future use and display, and also nonexclusive web and print publication rights, while retaining copyright
Award selection is at the sole discretion of FASEB. All decisions by FASEB are final
Submission of an image or video indicates that an entrant agrees to all BioArt terms and conditions listed above

Do I have to register on HeroX.com to follow the challenge, leave a comment or register to compete in the challenge?

Yes, but it’s quick and easy. Just click the “Solve this Challenge” button on this page and follow the instructions to complete your registration. All you need to provide is your name and email address.

How will submissions be judged?

Contest entries will be evaluated by a panel of FASEB-affiliated scientists on both aesthetic impact and scientific content.

When viewed in conjunction with the supporting nontechnical statement, submissions should be visually arresting and clearly communicate a cutting-edge biomedical science concept.

What types of media can be submitted?

What are the specifications for images?

Images must be JPG or PNG files at 300 dpi. Images can be no larger than 90 MB.

What types of videos can I submit?

Videos must be no more than 60 seconds and submitted via a URL.

Any video that is created as part of daily research activities or to illustrate research results can be submitted (e.g., chemotaxis, time-lapse photography, cultured cardiac cells “beating,” enzymatic activity animations, other data visualizations, etc.).

None of the previous winners used the imaging technique I use. Should I still submit my image?

Yes! If your image fits the criteria, please submit. Researchers in any biological field producing any type of visually compelling images or videos are encouraged to participate. FASEB wants to share the large spectrum of research with the public. The greater variety, the better!

Why are there multiple categories?

FASEB aims to highlight the diversity and breadth of life science research through the BioArt competition. With these image categories, FASEB hopes to encourage entries representing a wide range of imaging technologies and research topics.

Eligibility

Membership in a FASEB member society is NOT required to submit an image or video.
