Summary

Overview

This is your chance to design the next multi-million dollar XPRIZE and change the world, starting with our food systems. We invite you to conceptualize a prize competition that will change the face of food and nutrition on a global scale, by catalyzing new technologies and innovations.

Do you think we could use technology to eradicate hunger? Tackle obesity? Make nutritious food ultra-affordable and ubiquitous? Turn anyone into a superfarmer? Enable the colonization of Mars? Minimize the ecological footprint of food? You don't need to be an engineer, inventor or entrepreneur. Just tell us what the winning teams should do. For examples of active and past XPRIZE competitions, visit xprize.org.

Impact and Recognition

Up to 50 of the best prize concepts and their contributors will be delivered to XPRIZE and presented to over 200 industry leaders and celebrities at the next XPRIZE Visioneers Summit in September 2016. The very best ideas may be included in a roadmap for the future of food and nutrition, and will be the subject of further development in the coming weeks. You have a real chance to make history and make the world a better place!

Today, billions of people are malnourished (hungry, overweight, obese or suffering micronutrient deficiencies). Food has a massive impact on our environment. And we are not ready for the challenges of accelerated job automation, climate change and stagnant growth.

Let's imagine a better Future of Food.

Who We Are

  • The Nutritious Abundance Collaborative is a consortium of passionate food industry experts, interested citizens, and supportive philanthropists that has come together to develop XPRIZE's first food competitions. Please join us by signing up here.
  • XPRIZE is a non-profit organization that designs and manages public competitions intended to encourage technological development that could benefit mankind. Their Board of Trustees includes Elon Musk, James Cameron, Larry Page, Arianna Huffington, and Ratan Tata, among others.
  • The XPRIZE Visioneers Summit is when XPRIZE brings together more than 200 "Visioneers" - a mix of innovators, industry leaders, notable public figures, technology experts, and philanthropists who envision a better future. The Visioneers Summit is part of the XPRIZE strategic approach to evolve and advance its prize designs. We will present this competition's winning ideas at the 2016 Visioneers Summit in California.

Guidelines

To compete, please submit your answers to the following questions:

  • What is the Title of your idea? (up to three words)
  • What is a one sentence description? (140 characters)
  • Who is submitting this idea? Please provide your name(s), organization(s)/job(s) if relevant, and e-mail address(es), which will be used for crediting purposes once we've picked the winner
  • Describe your proposed XPRIZE. What are the prize rules? What specific outcomes would the winning team have to achieve to win your suggested XPRIZE? This could include things like performance metrics, product specifications, output level, limits on inputs and/or proxies for cost. Please include one to five measurable outcomes that must be achieved by the winning team. An example past XPRIZE is below. (1200 characters max)
  • An ideal XPRIZE incentivizes an innovation that would not otherwise be developed by the market, non-profits, or government: is anyone else working on this technology? If not, why not? If yes, which organizations, and why are they pursuing it too slowly? (600 characters max)
  • Briefly describe the social and environmental impact that you think could be achieved (600 characters max)
  • What sorts of people or organizations might compete for this prize? (600 characters max)
  • What size "price purse" would you recommend? This is the amount the winning team(s) would win, which usually ranges from $1M-$30M. (300 characters max)

Still wondering what an XPRIZE competition is? Here's an example:

  • Title: Ansari XPRIZE
  • Description: Teams compete to build a reusable, privately financed, manned spaceship
  • Prize Rules: What the winning team needed to accomplish:
    • Launch a spaceship capable of carrying three people
    • Reach 100 kilometers above Earth's surface
    • Do this TWICE within two weeks (so that it is reusable and brings down the cost of space travel)
    • No more than 10% of the mass can be replaced between flights
    • More than 90% private funding
  • Prize purse: $10M prize awarded in 2004
  • The impact: This prize opened space to the private sector, reinvigorated excitement about space travel, and triggered a commercial race to space and a US$2B industry that is growing rapidly.
