The thermal environment of the lunar surface is extreme in temperature, temperature swings, and cold soak durations. The thermal environment varies greatly with geographical location. Equipment, facilities, habitats, and life control apparatus will need passive and active thermal management systems that are robust and reliable. To win this challenge, describe an innovation that can improve one or more critical aspects of human spaceflight by addressing the thermal management challenges associated with the lunar environment.
For our nation to expand human presence in space, advances across a broad spectrum of technologies will be needed. The Jacobs Space Tech Challenge seeks innovations that significantly enhance at least one of the following critical aspects of human spaceflight: safety, affordability, schedule, capability. This year Jacobs is looking for innovations to aid human space flight by addressing challenges associated with thermal management in the lunar environment.
