“Structural chemist making data accessible and training the next generation of scientists.”
bio
Luigi F. Di Costanzo, born in Napoli, Italy, and a transnational/transcultural figure between the USA and Italy, is a structural chemist with a Ph.D. in chemistry from University of Trieste (Trieste, Italy) XVI ciclo and a UPenn (Philadelphia, PA) PostDoc (5 years+). His expertise lies in engineered peptides, macromolecular assemblies, and enzymes. A proud USA citizen since 2013, in 2019, Di Costanzo became an associate professor in the Department of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Naples Federico II, where he imparts knowledge in general and inorganic chemistry. Having a rich background, Di Costanzo served as a former Biocurator for the RCSB Protein Data Bank at Rutgers since 2010. In this role, he meticulously reviewed, curated, and validated over 7,500 incoming PDB structures, as highlighted in https://www.science.org/content/article/rewards-working-data-wrangler. Collaborating with numerous partners, he is currently engaged in multiple projects. Specialties: biocuration, databases, small molecules (but not so small!) and protein crystallography, SEM-EDS, Micro-tomography at SYRMEP Elettra, ligand binding studies through ITC and SPR techniques, citation networks using VOSViewer, science education, chemosensors, metabolites
