Overview

International Rocket Engineering Competition 2025

June 9-14, 2025

Over 2,000 students, faculty and mentors will gather for the 18th annual International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC)in June of 2025.  Drawn by the opportunity to collaborate and compete in a world class event, you represent the best and brightest from more than 150 colleges and universities located across the USA and around the world.

Join us as we host thousands of the world's most ambitious collegiate rocketeers in a one-of-a-kind event. Part academic conference and part design-build-fly style competition, the IREC has something to offer students, faculty, industry representatives, and amateur aerospace aficionados alike.

The biggest rockets, the highest altitudes and largest payloads!
How will you answer the call?

Whether you are an academic, an industry representative, a retired professional, or simply a passionate amateur supportive of young minds who seek new horizons... there are many ways you may become a part of an event impacting the future of aerospace...

As a Sponsor...

You could interact with over 1,800 university STEM students from top ranked universities and colleges in a professional and competitive setting. Not only can your organization interact with them face to face but you can also learn about how their aerospace hardware performs in real world conditions. Finally, you will help make possible an event which inspires the best possible candidates for your company!

As a Volunteer...

You will join a highly motivated and talented ESRA team which brings together the thousands of moving pieces to build the world's largest collegiate rocket engineering conference and competition. From directing crowds to directing launches and everything in between, we need you at the IREC!

As a Judge...

You will join a group of respected experts and professionals who interact with the student teams to evaluate and score the deliverables, including technical design documents, overall team performance and launch success.  This team determines who will receive the coveted Genesis Trophy as the Overall Winner of the IREC.

As a Student...

You will demonstrate your hard work on an international stage, in front of thousands of your peers, professors, and prospective employers. You will engage in design-build-fly style rocket and payload engineering competitions in a professional setting, at world class facilities, where the sky is not the limit!

June 11, 2025, 9:50 p.m. PDT by ESRA Competition Operations Anita Jimenez

IMPORTANT: THE FOLLOWING TEAMS STILL HAVE NOT CHECKED IN A PAYLOAD WHICH IS REQUIRED TO BE COMPLETED BEFORE A TEAM LAUNCHES. If a team launches before design and build quality and Payload are judged a significant point penalty will occur. All Payloads will be judged by SDL in the Final Flight Safety Tent.

IMPORTANT EDIT TO THURSDAY TEAM LIST - PLEASE READ

June 11, 2025, 9:17 p.m. PDT by ESRA Executive Director

Upon further review of many teams individual situations, the Thursday Team Listing is getting an amendment.

  • If you are not on the list of 60 teams, but you have a tent, you may come to the launch site and set up in the areas recently cleared of the damaged tents.
  • Teams that do not have sufficient tent space to shelter their team from the sun could be sent home.
  • Teams on the list are allowed to shelter under any of the big student tents provided by ESRA.

ESRA knows teams work together and help each other out. If you decide to buy tents and stores start running out, please be friendly and help each other out.

IMPORTANT UPDATE - Launch Site Information for Thursday

June 11, 2025, 6:03 p.m. PDT by ESRA Executive Director

Today was a challenging day with the benefit of excellent weather. Thursday will BE MUCH HOTTER SO PREPARE!!!

The ESRA team was able to successfully launch over 30 teams.

The hard work of the tent supplier has restored 4 student team tents which is 50% of what we had so tent space will be a premium for the remainder of the week.  A majority of the debris has been cleared but some broken tents are still there.  DO NOT GO NEAR THEM.

Before you arrive for your Final Flight Check, complete the following:

  1. Bring your Rocket (Ready to Fly)
  2. Bring your Double-headed Igniter (NOT inserted into the motor but taped to the side)
  3. Bring your Flight Card
  4. Alert your Flyer of Record that your team is ready to fly.

Rules for Thursday:

  • Only invited teams are allowed to enter the launch site.  Similar to today, there will be a morning group and then an afternoon group.  Gate will open at 5:00am for the morning group.  Be prepared to launch ASAP. The afternoon group will be announced 3hrs before you need to be onsite, so please be prepared to depart.
  • If your team has already flown (on Wednesday), you should not be set up under a tent. The limited tent space is reserved for teams who still need to Fly.
  • Once you complete your flight tomorrow, please vacate your tent space to allow other unflown teams to prepare.  If you have a canopy, you can certainly bring it.
  • There is no 45k high altitude waiver tomorrow. 10k and 30k flights are approved.
  • Flight Safety Reviews will be available at 7am
  • Final Flight Reviews will be available at 5am
  • Ejection charge testing will be available at 8am
  • If your team IS NOT READY TO FLY tomorrow, send an email to

HYDRATION AT LAUNCHSITE

June 11, 2025, 2:24 p.m. PDT by ESRA Registration Sierra Stockwell

Hello Rocketeers,

We are seeing a lot of dehydrated students out at the launchsite. EMS is recommending that students have 3-4 Liquid IV powder packets per day to keep dehydration under control. Stay safe!!

Thank you for your time,

Sierra Stockwell
