Aerial yoga encompasses the Sweatlife by incorporating the body, mind, and community through exercise that benefits the body and emotions.
3. Opportunity: Which pillar of well-being, and which aspect of that particular pillar, are being addressed by the idea? In what way does it influence a pillar? What type of individual and community would benefit from the idea?
Body: Increases flexibility and temporarily relaxes muscles (Dr. Allan Steward, Mount Sinai Hospital). Helps to relieve spine tension and hip muscles caused by poor sitting posture (Dr Gerard Malanga, New Jersey Sports Medicine).
Mind: Focuses on mind-body harmony, reduces stress, and facilitates emotional healing (Dr Sat Bir Khalsa, Harvard Medical School).
Community: Targets working women with desk jobs. Participating together promotes collectivism and gives people a sense of belonging.
4. Innovation: Why is your idea unique, novel, and/or impactful? What will the future look like if we’re successful in bringing your idea to life? How does the proposed solution differ from existing solutions addressing human well-being?
In their busy schedules daily, working women neglect the health of their body and soul. Aerial yoga helps them to connect with their inner self by shutting out all external worries and focusing on their posture. It is a holistic form of empowerment, equipping women with confidence and healthier bodies. Aerial yoga is classified as a low to moderate intensity exercise, enabling women to destress and wind down after a demanding week at work.
5. Action Plan: Please justify and briefly describe the major steps needed to make this idea a reality. Does the technology and understanding exist now? Is it likely to exist in the next 3-5 years?
Implementation of aerial yoga is feasible due to the availability of needed equipment, such as hammocks and support beams.
Aerial yoga is a wellness concept that can be readily executed using existing space within a physical store. Unlike regular yoga, the aerial form makes use of suspended hammocks. Support beams or plate mounts will be permanently installed on the store ceiling to support the hammocks. The grey steel beams or mounts will be painted to match the ceiling colour, reducing the stark contrast. The hammocks will be made of premium silk or parachute grade nylon and coloured in red and white, akin to the brand logo. The hammocks can be easily set up and taken down for each yoga session.
Aerial yoga readily makes use of the space within a Lululemon store without a need for drastic reconfiguration. In order to provide ample space for participants to move around in their hammocks, light display racks for clothing will be temporarily moved to the fitting or storage area.
The aerial yoga sessions will be held once a week on a weekend morning before store opening hours, enabling participants to focus wholly and appreciate their exercise in peace.
