What we are proposing is not only a change to the layout of the store but rather, redefining what a store is and how it affects customers.
3. Opportunity: Which pillar of well-being, and which aspect of that particular pillar, are being addressed by the idea? In what way does it influence a pillar? What type of individual and community would benefit from the idea?
We are attempting to hit all of the pillars at once, while difficult we believe it is very doable. Our plan will allow for mind, body, and community to benefit. By bringing people together for more than just buying clothes we can create a better community. By utilizing the yoga classes and health seminars we can improve mental well being and health overall.
4. Innovation: Why is your idea unique, novel, and/or impactful? What will the future look like if we’re successful in bringing your idea to life? How does the proposed solution differ from existing solutions addressing human well-being?
Our solution is one that has been utilized in parts before however, we believe that when used as a whole through the customer base and platform that lululemon has, that we can change communities for the better. If our idea is successfully implemented lululemon will no longer be view as just an athleisure store but as a community health and wellness company, a company that prioritizes its customers over its profits.
5. Action Plan: Please justify and briefly describe the major steps needed to make this idea a reality. Does the technology and understanding exist now? Is it likely to exist in the next 3-5 years?
The first step would be to hold yoga classes inside the store, maybe in a separate yoga room. This would bring the same people in on a frequent basis, and not only improve overall health but also would make people more likely to buy products that they walk by and see or see on other people on a frequent basis. This would also likely cause people to strongly associate the good feeling of fitness with your store, improving their attitudes and potentially leading to purchases. This concept would, beyond obviously improving individuals’ health, build a community in the same way that many traditional gyms and yoga studios do. Healthy Communities of this sort also are always growing, allowing more and more new consumers to join, inevitably passing through the isles of the store along the way. Having a strong, growing community that visits the store on a frequent basis would be incredibly beneficial for both community members and the store’s traffic.
Our second step would be to bring in a lot of natural light, plants, and the general feeling of the outdoors into the building. There are lots of studies that say people are more relaxed in nature and around plant life, and that just the presence of nature can benefit human health. Many studies have even been conducted showing that in retail stores, the presence of greenery can very much increase customer expenditures. This effect is caused by the customers’ increased comfort and relaxation. If new and redesigned stores’ designs included plant life, and plants were scattered throughout the store, the store could benefit from increased sales while also providing a positive and healthy atmosphere for customers.
Our third step would be to provide and educate people on proper nutrition. A smoothie bar could easily be implemented into the store, and would not only give customers an additional reason to come to the store but also would provide good food for them. In order to educate people seminars could be held in the yoga room at certain times that could give people nutrition, lifestyle, and well being advice. These seminars could be followed with a sale on items for attending in order to not only encourage people to come to them but also would give incentive to buy more products.
