Profile Mark Schauer is co-founder and CEO of SunSpirit Enterprises, dedicated to developing products to enable a modern, sustainable lifestyle. He and David Gailus have been working on solar co-generation of heat and electrical power using parabolic trough solar concentrators and Stirling engines in conjunction with passive solar multi-functional building designs to affordably provide housing, food and energy independent of fossil fuels. Dr. Schauer has been a Principal Scientist with Nanocomp Technologies (now a wholly owned subsidiary of Huntsman Advanced Materials) for the past 15+ years, helping to develop the core technology for the production of Miralon®, as well as developing various applications. He was instrumental in developing yarn with exceptional strength and electrical conductivity, as well as increasing production rate while improving material quality. More recently he has been involved in developing pulp dispersion products as a conductive additives for lithium ion batteries. He is currently PI on a $500k USG contract to develop a new Lithium Ion Battery Anode. Education and Training • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Physical Chemistry – Colorado State University • Undergrad (BA), Chemistry – University of Oregon Recent Research and Professional Experience • (Present) CEO & Co-Founder – SunSpirit Enterprises, LLC. • (From 2006 – Present) Principal Scientist – Nanocomp Technologies, Inc. o Helped develop core technology for Floating Catalyst Chemical Vapor Deposition production of Miralon®. o Developed the production and Post-Production Processing of high strength and electrically conductive Miralon® yarn. o Developed dispersible Miralon® pulp for conductive adhesives, static-dissipative and anti-corrosion coatings, and conductive additives for lithium ion batteries. • (From 2000 – 2005) Head of Engineering – Morgan Advanced Ceramics o Applications Engineering involving overseeing the CVD process and interfacing with customers to improve the performance and yield of Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) crucibles made of Pyrolytic Boron Nitride (PBN). o As Senior Engineer, oversaw the process for the production of silicon water holders made of Chemical Vapor Deposited (CVD) Silicon Carbide. o As Engineering Manager, guided process improvements and new product development as well as organizing the Engineering department around Six Sigma and ISO 9000 principles. A method was developed that reduced the cost of producing the material for the wafer holders (the company’s principle product) by 85% (Co-inventor on the patent). Publications & Patents • > 20 peer-reviewed publications, list available upon request. • 3 Patents and several Patent Applications available upon request.
