Shaun Foster
Professor at RIT
Fairport, New York, United States
“Inspired to use XR and AI to amplify human potential and make knowledge more accessible.”
bio
Shaun Foster is a Professor of 3D Digital Design and AI Faculty Fellow at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester, New York. He specializes in immersive and interactive communication systems that combine XR/VR, real-time 3D, gaze-based interaction, generative AI, and educational design to make complex information more understandable, engaging, and actionable for diverse audiences. Over approximately two decades, Foster has worked at the intersection of 3D graphics, interactive media, public-facing education, and emerging technology. His experience includes leading and contributing to projects in augmented reality, virtual reality, eye tracking, interactive learning, virtual production, and AI-enhanced design workflows. He has developed VR experiences that use gaze-based interfaces and intuitive spatial interaction, a background directly relevant to projects that require accessible, low-friction user engagement and decision support. Foster’s work is especially aligned with this project’s goals because it blends technical innovation with audience-centered communication. He has recent experience supporting product release workflows that required localization across multiple languages, including English and Spanish, and he has developed public-facing educational and media content for broad audiences through digital and social platforms. He also maintains a YouTube presence with more than 11,000 followers, providing practical experience in content dissemination, audience engagement, and translating complex technical topics into understandable formats. At RIT, Foster’s teaching, research, and creative practice focus on the convergence of interactive 3D, AI, storytelling, and next-generation interface design. His prior grant and collaborative project experience includes NY State Augmented Reality Tourism, NSF BioFuel Education, VR HTC Vive initiatives, VR Cary, URMC VR Steroid Pathways Learning, Epic MegaGrant Online Learning, Epic MegaGrant Virtual Production as Co-PI, VR Eye Tracking work involving NVIDIA and IBM-Notre Dame, and a Meta-supported project. Across these efforts, he has consistently worked on systems that connect emerging technology with learning, public communication, and applied problem-solving. Foster is an Authorized Unreal Instructor and has received recognition including the Epic Games ICVFX Fellowship and RIT’s Provost Innovative Teaching with Technology Award. His current work emphasizes immersive learning systems, XR/VR eye tracking, AI-supported content creation, and scalable interactive experiences that can be adapted for different audiences, literacy levels, and channels. This combination of immersive media expertise, multilingual delivery awareness, educational design, and public outreach positions him well to contribute to a project focused on helping people make safer, more informed decisions through engaging, evidence-based digital experiences.
