Interesting...Didn't know that could be an option!
short description
Multinational proposal called “Interesting...Didn't know that could ” "Inclusion and Recruitment of patients with cancer to clinical trials
Eligibility
Barriers
Physicians limited communication with patients about this option, lack of cultural awareness, Information available through technology channels is sometimes hard to understand. Not all patients are computer literate and/or rather personal touch first, mistrust on research, Lack of cooperation between Health agencies. Knowing the problem and doing the same thing over and over. Because these obstacles do not allow a good quality of life or adequate health care services. Governments have the obligation to ensure the health condition of its citizens. We are in a globalized world that any occurrence, somehow infers in one or other regions or countries and neighborhoods.
We cannot address many of the existing barriers to enrollment in one project because they involve a large number of stakeholders. Therefore, we decided to focus on the biggest and most important one, lack of awareness about Clinical Trials and follow up steps that lead to recruitment.

How/why do the barriers prevent cancer patients from participating in clinical trials?
Because they have been existing for years and little has been done about it. There is a lot of information being collected but politics, funding, trust or lack of, systems in place, low acceptance to change, and many other factors keep preventing people from participating. There is not a FULL open communication.

What is your proposed solution to addressing the barriers?
Viable followers team solution.pdf
What are potential obstacles to your solution? How will you work around these roadblocks?
As new things are introduced to the public, there is always going to be opposition and rejections. We anticipate the same. However, our approach is different, simple, short, powerful, without any cost to the attendees, and ultimately; truthful engaging and somehow, entertaining; therefore we feel extremely confident that once people realize what our intentions are that they will receive the message with open arms and ears and that they will tell their friends and family members. We expect each person to serve as a link to the rest of the population.
Other potential obstacles identified include the following:
• Medical insurance of little or no coverage to these cases
• Participation in clinical trials is a matter of choice, of freedom, of volunteering
• The people to be included is skeptical due to lack of knowledge on the subject
Organizations promote trials using TV, Radio, Internet, web applications and of course the doctor who is a researcher so changing or adding to this way to educate and recruit will not be easy but sure is appropriate due to data of under enrollment.
Lack of funds to produce our whole idea.

How will you work around these roadblocks?
SENSITIZE! Show that unity works for ALL after checking how goals and missions can be accomplished for the same outcome. Specially access to care to all communities including de underserved. Minorities are important and companies and organizations funding research should be part of the solution and talking to organizations that provide access to care and help them actually to not only gain data but to treat patients looking for control and cure.
Our creative approach will be well received as it is something new and without cost to the patient
This approach is more personal that embraces love and personal care.
Perseverance, commitment, sensibility, creativity, forming partnerships, and a lot of TLC.
Start only in one location to show what we mean, we will document the idea to reproduce it. Funders like you should be approach but will need to win to show that other people believe in our idea.
What % increase in accrual rates do you anticipate?
The impact will be all positive and very efficient because people will be more aware of Clinical Trials, participants will know more than before about it. Our approach will be a proactive approach, people will know ahead of time what the options are in the event that cancer becomes part of their lives, either personally or family members and friends.
Our sincere expectation is to achieve the desired goal of increasing participation to 6% or greater.
Why? Because our approach is more personal, caring, powerful, impacting and it is not only directed to the active patient but we intend to expand this message to many stakeholders. People are desensitized and we need this kind of performances and presentations and works of art to create an impact which will make them remember that cancer unfortunately can “hit home. Motivation is the key. And because we think that the cost to implement will be less than current not super successful methods.
• How will you prove it?
Validation of the strategies
Analysis of the results
Evaluation of the objective impact on populations
By forming partnerships with local clinics, cancer centers, etc., . which in return will help track, record and share the data collected. Many of the participants of the implementation challenge will prove it!
Survey at the end of the play to those who want to complete it … about knowledge about CT before and after the play. Satisfaction of the play, reasons they will be involve in a trial, barriers they could see, needed resources, and of course find out if they are a patient, drug company, family member, doctor, advocate, caregiver, etc..
How long will it take to achieve this increase with your solution?
Our expectation is that in a year time we should see results. A small sample. To really make an impact we know that it takes time to implement a different approach.
We can travel around the world to show how it can be done and train others…. Fund us, find foundations, organizations that also like our idea and we will succeed.

How do you anticipate maintaining the % increase in accrual rates over time?
The commitment to continue the project for determined periods of time. With the permanent planning, continuous review, the monitoring of each and every one of the aspects that make up the event, as well as the registration, evaluation and follow-up. And last but no least, a true commitment of all stakeholders involved! they will see once we prove our proposal correct, that increase can be done and maintained, and to keep it, results of research should be made public and keep people AWARE of new trials, positive and not so positive results and always keep patient safety first!
How will you overcome legal/regulatory hurdles, if any?
The laws are written for a purpose and hopefully to protect all parties involved. We need to follow and overcome the obstacles through the analysis of conflict resolution and decision-making. Advocacy, to politicians and other parties to avoid needless process, etc
Why hasn’t your proposed solution been tried before? If it has, what prevented it from succeeding?
We are unaware if this approach has been tested before in the cancer clinical trials arena, this proposal is original for being outlined in a level directed and controlled specifically towards achieving concrete results. Such activities if achieved, but not in the fundamental form which is presented in this proposal. Because it really includes diversity and disparities.Perhaps not enough funding, not very good ideas, or hard opposition from several sectors. Indeed, this type of activities are successful, people of all ages enjoy them. Not much has been done to address mistrust, in doctors and healthcare system,
All kind of organizations need to be involved. Win Win for all.
Need first to do raise awareness about Clinical Trials And then all the others aspects will follow.
Many reports, old and new keep talking about people not knowing about Clinical Trials, if they knew about it, they might participate. We also know that a large percentage of the ones that participate, are satisfied and will repeat. So WE KNOW a huge number of people DO NOT KNOW about Clinical Trials, Lets us show you how they can learn about it. That will be half of the battle, the rest will be up to the investigators, cancer center, national organizations, pharma companies, search and enrollment tools, etc. Let's work together to shorten this sentence: Interesting... Didn't know Clinical Trials could be an option! to: Clinical Trials is an option!
