We are proud to announce the winners in the $17,500 My Kidney Nutrition App Features Challenge.

By the submission deadline, there were 35 entries to the challenge. After careful review by a comprehensive VA evaluation panel, the award recipients are as follows:

 

First Prize ($5,000 USD)

Ashley Barney’s entry (USA) - Kidney Defender - The app that guides users in their personal quest for better health and celebrates as they become the champion of their inner needs.

 

Runner Up Prize ($2,500 USD)

Devon Chenette’s entry (USA) - Kreative Kidney - Kreative Kidney is an app that promotes healthy food choices through community engagement and incentivized profile upgrade rewards.

 

Finalist Prizes ($1,000 USD)

James Cobb, RN, MSN’s entry (USA) - Sidney Kidney/ Cindy Kidney - A comprehensive gaming solution to optimize behavior among renal patients informed by the technological adoption lifecycle and personality.

Douglas Chung‘s entry (USA) - KidneyUp! - KidneyUp is a wellness application designed to give feedback on the impact of dietary and other choices with powerful data tracking tools.

Esther Humphrey‘s entry (USA)- It's simply my kidney! - A visual of a kidney that resets every morning and based on inputs would visually appear better or worse by the end of the day.

Exygy Health‘s entry (USA) - Sidney the Kidney Personal Assistant - Sidney is a data-rich chatbot driven interface that offers customized interaction with patients through a simple back and forth conversation.

Mitul Sarkar’s Entry (USA) - Getting the diet done right, one meal at a time - App + phone camera + cloud AI = easy-to-follow, kidney-healthy meals using ingredients that are already at home. MEALS = GAMES; not chores.

George Lai’s Entry (USA) - Health Brawl - Use USRDS nutrition database in a competition with flash cards, player/team vs player/team games, to earn rewards used to buy real objects.

Ovidiu Dobre’s Entry (Romania) - Nutrition Hero - Gamification techniques for improving nutrition of CKD patients while engaging them into a motivational and rewarding process.

Eva G’s Entry (UK) - CKD Freedom App - The App is game-like and set in a fantasy-type environment with an aim to entice and entertain the User while effectively setting goals and achieving targets that have an impact on Users real life.

Jason Lovett’s Entry (USA) - My Kidney Nutrition App - Reliable dietary guidance from live RDNs, earn healthy kidney-friendly meal-in-a-box deliveries, connect to other Vets in CKD/renal failure.

Dorey Glenn’s Entry (USA) - The Renal Recipe Repository - The Renal Recipe Repository is an interactive database of CKD-friendly recipes for users on low potassium, phosphorous, or sodium diets.

 

Next Steps

The My Kidney Nutrition App Features Challenge on HeroX is just the beginning of a series of challenges to build an app for those with Kidney Disease.  These challenges will be held on the Topcoder platform, and you can follow along and compete here.  The ideas entered here provide a great base of ideas and features that might be considered for inclusion and inspiration in the final app!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the innovators who entered the challenge. While only the innovators listed above are receiving the prizes, there were so many other insightful solutions, and we are confident that many of the innovators in this challenge will do great things in the future.
