Dietary Guidelines to Reduce Parkinson's Symptoms

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases in older adults where neuron death leads to deterioration of motor skills, brain function, and other essential bodily functions. Levodopa, a dopamine precursor, is the most proven therapy to lessen disease symptoms in PD patients. However, levodopa competes with amino acids for transport from the intestinal lumen into the plasma and for transport across the blood-brain barrier.

We have developed a comprehensive pharmacokinetic model to predict how meal timing and meal macronutrient composition (particularly protein amount and composition) affect the efficacy of Levodopa treatment.
