In the Challenge Webinar - Q&A Log, it mentioned that discharge of sediment into the downstream river is beyond the scope of this competition. Therefore, the strategy discussed in this topic might not fall into the scope. How do you think?
@Wu Steven I think what they meant by saying it is beyond the scope of the competition is that we do not need to spend time analyzing the effects of the sediment downstream. They have said many times that sending sediment downstream is cost effective and beneficial in many ways. Permitting, sediment load and release timing are beyond the scope of the competition. They just want us to focus on how to remove the sediment from the reservoir.
@Wu Steven The focus of the competition is on the removal and transport of sediment. The acceptable discharge rate downstream will be river specific and you do not need to consider this discharge downstream.
We were able to work with HeroX to draft challenge guidelines, promote the challenge to a targeted audience of interested parties, and ultimately draw a crowd of innovators from across the globe to submit proposals to address our challenge. We were quite satisfied with the number and diversity of both individuals and proposals that the challenge drew.
