A lunar eclipse happens when the moon passes behind the Earth with respect to the sun i.e. into the Earths shadow. The shadow slowly creeps across the moon until the moon is completely dark.

At this point light passing through the Earths atmosphere is bent (refracted) towards the moon. Blue light is scattered more, leaving the red light to illuminate the moon. This is the same phenomena that causes the red skies during the sunsets and rises.

This is what makes this so awe inspiring - you are effectively seeing all the earths sunrises and sunsets at that moment, being reflected of the surface of the moon.

The image was taken using a Canon 600d camera attached to a 8inch newtonian reflector telescope at just after 3am on the morning of 28th September 2015 in Essex, U.K.
