Mahdi Haddad

Mahdi Haddad is a Research Assistant Professor and Reservoir Geomechanicist at the Bureau of Economic Geology (BEG) at UT-Austin. With 16 years of experience, he specializes in subsurface geomechanical modeling and electromagnetic monitoring, with a focus on developing diagnostic technologies that mitigate operational risks in energy projects. His recent research includes developing fully coupled poroelastic models to understand the mechanisms behind induced seismicity and characterizing salt formations for large-scale energy storage. Utilizing the Bureau’s advanced rock mechanics laboratory and the Devine Field Test Site (DFTS), he bridges theoretical modeling with field-scale validation. A recognized leader in the field, Dr. Haddad is a founding organizer of the ARMA induced seismicity webinar series and has authored over 34 peer-reviewed publications. His work has been honored with the 2018 SPE International Cedric K. Ferguson Medal and the 2020 SPE Technical Reviewer Award. He earned his PhD in Petroleum Engineering from UT-Austin, following advanced degrees in Mechanical and Petroleum Engineering from Sharif University of Technology.
