East/West PV panels have shown to be as effective as south-facing panels in some latitudes and seasons. Vertical panels with 90-180 degree offsets are more effective for long duration charge and discharge cycles. Modifications to PV cell configurations and rethinking traditional PV panels designed for horizontal applications is necessary for distributed energy resources of the future. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be integrated to control PV modules based on a number of geospatial and environmental inputs. PV cells and controls optimized for vertical installation can eliminate the duck curve, reduce land and roof area needed for solar arrays, and greatly accelerate adoption of solar generation by expanding the market potential to the sky!
