Adding PV to houses that have 15 year old refrigerators and 10 year old washer and dryers is a major waste of power. With the advent of the IoT, the appliance industry should develop a whole-house approach to share heat, electricity and data between appliances which could increase the value of adding renewables significantly. Then it will be easier to allocate energy via smart contracts when micro-grids begin to trend. A consortium of appliance companies could be formed to accomplish this and in the process reduce the energy requirement of a home by 50%.
