Test firing of your engine is one of the most hazardous steps in the process of building a rocket. Therefore, you are required to obtain approval prior to beginning any static test firing related to your Base 11 Space Challenge engine. The National Rocketry League, LLC., the Safety Advisory Council, and the judges will review your stand design and test firing procedures to ensure that they are well thought out and adhere to the Safety Guidelines. It is a simple go/no-go decision. If it's a no-go , you will receive feedback about what needs to be fixed.

The form to request approval for static test firings has just been posted to the website. Here's how to get approval:

  • Go to www.herox.com/spacechallenge
  • Click the button for "Request for Static Test Firing Approval" (big orange button in the upper right)
  • Submit your test stand design
  • Submit your static test fire procedures
  • You'll be notified at the end of the following month if your plans are approved.

To clarify the timeline:

  • The static test fire requests will be reviewed on a rolling basis
  • Submissions are due the last Friday of each month at 5 p.m. Pacific
  • You will be notified of the reviewers' decision by the end of the month after your submission. For example, if you submit your request the last Friday of January, then at the end of February, you will receive your go/no-go decision.
  • The last date to submit a request for approval to begin static test firing is November 29,2019 -- over a year from now!

Additional information can be found in the Challenge Guidelines and in the document Requirements for Static Test Firing Approval. Remember to plan ahead for when you want to start your static test firing, and be sure to submit your plans for approval well in advance.

Please note, this approval process applies only to test firings related to the engine you're building for the Base 11 Space Challenge, not for other rockets or contests you're working on.
