The Rodeo II Forecasting Challenge is Open!
BY LIZ TREADWELL | 1 min read

The Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) is proud to announce that the Rodeo II: Sub-Seasonal Climate Forecasting competition is now open for pre-registration. Data and computer scientists, climatologists, meteorologists as well as other experts from across the globe are invited to participate and put their skills to the test in this invigorating challenge.

Competing individuals and teams will be asked to use historical temperature and precipitation statistics to improve current forecasting skill and predict weather conditions several weeks in advance. This will help better prepare regions of the United States that experience extreme weather conditions such as drought or flooding.

A previous version of the competition, Rodeo I, launched in December 2016 and resulted in three winning teams who shared the prize pool. This year, participants will be competing for a total of $800,000 in prizes over the course of 12 months. The first marathon match will award $80,000 to the top 10 submitters.

Government organizations such as Reclamation and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, turn to crowdsourcing innovation to obtain a range of potential solutions from diverse backgrounds they wouldn’t normally have access to. These open calls for innovation can also benefit the participants outside of just winning one of the prizes. For example, two teams from the Rodeo I competition ended up forming a partnership to commercialize the methods they had developed. Whether you win a prize or not, the experience of getting involved in these types of initiatives can be priceless.

So, what are you waiting for? The first Marathon Match begins on June 27th. Get ready by visiting the competition page on TopCoder to learn more and pre-register today.
