Discover energy technologies to build your business plan around in the EnergyTech University Prize.

EnergyTech UP is a collegiate competition challenging multidisciplinary student teams to develop and present a business plan that leverages U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory-developed and other high-potential energy technologies. EnergyTech UP awards cash prizes to teams that successfully identify an energy technology, assess its market potential, and propose a strategy for commercialization.

But how do you find high-potential energy technologies to use in this competition?

One resource you can use to view technologies developed by national labs is DOE’s Lab Partnering Service (LPS), an online platform that brings together patents, intellectual property, and expertise from across the DOE national labs. The prize administrators compiled an initial list of technologies we think would be a good fit for EnergyTech UP business plans.

Prospective teams are encouraged to explore this list, and all technologies on the LPS, for ideas of technologies that may be appropriate for commercialization or that would benefit from an innovative business plan. While this list is provided as a preliminary list for initial exploration, the use of these technologies does not provide any advantage as compared to other technologies and this list may change over time.

The top teams will compete for a share of $100,000 in prizes funded by the Office of Technology Transitions (OTT). In addition, six DOE Technology Offices are offering up to $25,000 each in bonus prizes for the best teams in their respective fields. The six technology areas include:

  • Geothermal
  • Solar energy
  • Nuclear energy
  • Fossil energy and carbon management
  • Building technologies
  • Water power

Competitors are not limited to only pursuing DOE-developed technologies. You are free to use high-potential technologies developed by your school or other laboratories. Please see the rules for official details on what qualifies.

The prize administrators encourage you to consider all opportunities as you compete for part of $250,000 in total cash prizes. If you have questions about energy technology opportunities, please use the HeroX forum to post a public question or email .
